Kingsbury Water Park Fishery recently had the pleasure of hosting an inspiring 48-hour fishing event organised by Phoenix Heroes, a charity dedicated to supporting veterans and their families as they navigate mental health and transition challenges. The event took place at the picturesque Pine Pool, known for its carp fishing, offering participants a chance to connect with nature and one another while angling.
The event was especially meaningful as it honoured the memory of veteran Elliot Hennell. Among those participating was Elliot's father, Mick, who joined fellow anglers for a weekend filled with fishing, laughter and shared experiences.
“This event has been a wonderful opportunity for veterans to come together, remember our brother Elliot, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of fishing in such a beautiful setting,” shared Gary Stockton, founder of Phoenix Heroes. “We are incredibly grateful to Dan and all the staff at Kingsbury for making us feel so welcome.”
Phoenix Heroes CIC supports veterans across the UK through outdoor activities, helping them overcome the challenges of transitioning from military to civilian life while often dealing with complex trauma. Founded in 2018 by veteran Gary Stockton, the not-for-profit organisation promotes community and belonging while addressing mental health difficulties.
Activities such as fishing and gardening not only reduce stress but also help veterans develop new skills and interests, helping them find purpose and fulfilment after leaving the military. More information and support for veterans can be found at www.phoenixheroes.co.uk.
Warwickshire County Council is committed to supporting veterans, as demonstrated by its chairing of the regional Armed Forces Community Covenant Partnership. This brings together partners in both the private and public sector to make sure that armed forces personnel, past and present, and their families are treated fairly and supported in accessing public and commercial services, education and opportunities for employment.
Councillor Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Culture and Climate at Warwickshire County Council, commented, “Fishing at Kingsbury Water Park brings so many benefits to our community. It’s fantastic to see how events like these not only support our veterans but also encourage people of all backgrounds to connect with nature and one another. I applaud the work of Phoenix Heroes and the positive impact they are making.”
