Addressing feedback regarding the new surface on The Stratford Greenway

Our statement addressing feedback regarding the new surface on The Stratford Greenway

We are aware that some cyclists and pram users have voiced concerns about the new surface of The Stratford Greenway, particularly around the level of resistance of the surface and water pooling in some areas.

The greenway was resurfaced using a two-layer tar and chip surface. The way this type of surface works is that the top layer of chippings beds in and migrates over time, creating a smoother finish. The surface was chosen as the only cost-effective solution that adequately meets the needs of the range of visitors who enjoy our greenway, including walkers, joggers, cyclists, and horse riders. This type of surface has been used successfully for multi-use paths and areas at locations including Ryton Pools Country Park and Kingsbury Water Park.

Parts of The Stratford Greenway sit lower than the surrounding fields, meaning some water pooling may occur in wetter weather. Care should be taken when visiting the greenway in these conditions, but we would not expect access to be restricted.

The resurfaced section was recently re-inspected following visitor feedback. One area just before Stannals Bridge was identified to have a deeper surface dressing than expected. This will be rectified by contractors imminently. We will be returning on Tuesday 18 June to further inspect the surface and see whether any additional measures may be needed to ‘bed in’ the surface; however, it is our expectation that this will happen naturally thanks to continued usage and the warmer weather forecast.

While we appreciate some visitors have found the higher levels of resistance of the new surface at present to be a challenge, we have also had lots of positive feedback about the look and feel of the surface. As the surface beds in, it will become more consistent with less friction for cyclists; however, we would reiterate that we encourage responsible, family-friendly cycling to ensure all visitors have a safe and pleasant experience.

We greatly appreciate feedback from the community as we work to make our country parks and green spaces the best they can be now and for future generations. Any further comments can be sent to parks@warwickshire.gov.uk.
